I was excited to photograph Matthew because he looked so cool. Then we met and hung out, and I realized he does more than just LOOK cool, he IS cool.
We spent an hour at the Shuksan Bistro using the environment of the location, plus the kitchen to create some epic headshots that also tell a story of where he is. I love looking around for the interesting spots. In Matthew’s case, I wanted to do something outdoors, so found a little section of trees that add a bit of a wild element. We also used the distressed-looking metal door of their walk-in freezer inside the kitchen to give a bit of an epic edge to his portraits. Then, he brought out his set of knives, which is a must-have for any chef portrait!
I love adding a lifestyle or environmental element to headshot portraits. It makes people take a second look, and tells a bit of a story that a standard business headshot doesn’t. My goal is never just to make a person look “pretty”, but rather to make them look interesting. I want people to think “I’d love to sit down over a beer and hear this person’s stories!” I think interesting is great for business.
