Drone Photography: Risk and Safety

Bellingham Drone Photographer Ben Bender

I’ve crashed a drone. More than one in fact.

And yes, I’m a licensed drone pilot. But sometimes things happen.

Once, I had a drone attempt to crash into a river in Texas. It was a somewhat successful attempt, but miraculously flew back out of the water and returned to land. I even have the footage to prove it.

Another time there was an incident with a tree. And then that one time flying inside a massive manufacturing facility and “just a little bit higher” wasn’t a great idea…

No one has ever gotten hurt when I’ve crashed a drone (except for the drone). But that’s because as a licensed and experienced pilot, you don’t do things that will put people at risk.

I’m sure you’ve seen the youtube videos of drones crashing into people and heard of the injuries. Those are people who aren’t following the rules when it comes to flying a drone safely. There are rules about where to fly, and having someone watching the drone while it’s in the air.

When you’re using a drone operator for photography or video, it’s a good idea to find someone who’s licensed. Not only is it against the law to use a drone for commercial purposes without a license, but it can also be dangerous when people don’t know the rules and put others at risk.

If you’re looking for a drone operator in Bellingham or the surrounding area, let’s talk.
